Clerow "Flip" Wilson, Jr. was born in 1933 and began his career in show business by playing the role of a drunken patron in San Francisco nightclubs between regular comedy acts. He developed his act and eventually claimed his own television show called the Flip Wilson Show in 1970. He is shown here as Geraldine, one of his many comic characters. Geraldine's trademark phrase "The devil made me do it" both revealed and made light of the unspoken fear of intersexuality, a topic which only a great comedian could have used as fodder on national network television.
